The best barrel saunas for most backyards are the Almost Heaven Pinnacle for an all-round four-seater, the Redwood Outdoors 6 Person Barrel if you want the heater included in one package, and the SaunaLife Ergo E7 if you live somewhere with long, hard winters. All three use thick wooden staves held by steel bands, run on a 240V electric heater and fit on a footprint of roughly 6 by 6 ft (1.8 by 1.8 m).

Below we compare seven models on wood, wall thickness, real seating space, heater options and the one drawback that should stop you buying each. This guide sits inside our wider barrel saunas hub, which covers sizing and running costs in more depth.

Why this matters now: in early November 2026 both Almost Heaven and Redwood Outdoors were already showing pre-Black Friday markdowns, and lead times run to several weeks. If you order this month, plan the base now. A gravel or concrete pad is far easier to lay before the ground freezes.

How we chose

We have not tested these saunas. This is a research-based buyer's guide built from manufacturer specification pages, assembly and site-preparation guides, and published owner and retailer measurements. We shortlisted brands that publish full specs (wood species, wall thickness, interior size and electrical needs) and that sell in North America. We left out any model whose wood type or heater we could not confirm. Prices change daily in November, so we use tiers rather than numbers: budget, mid-range and premium.

The best barrel saunas in detail

1. Almost Heaven Pinnacle 4 Person: best overall

The Pinnacle is a 6 by 6 ft (1.8 by 1.8 m) barrel with an assembled size of 78 x 71 x 81.5 in (198 x 180 x 207 cm). Almost Heaven lists ball-and-socket lumber 1 3/8 in (35 mm) thick, stainless steel bands, hinges and fasteners, tempered glass and an interior LED light. The interior measures 75 1/4 x 63 1/4 x 69 1/4 in, with benches 16 in (41 cm) deep. The standard heater is a 6 kW Harvia KIP. A kilowatt (kW) is 1,000 watts of heating output; 6 kW suits a small room like this. It needs a 240V, 30 amp hardwired supply, and the light runs on a 120V plug-in circuit. It is made in the USA and the maker quoted shipping within 6 to 8 weeks in November 2026.

Verdict: the safest default. Clear specs, a sensible heater match and three window options (none, port or vista).
Best for: two to four people who want a proven barrel without extras.
Main drawback: the 6 kW heater must be hardwired, so budget for an electrician and possibly a trench for the cable.
Skip it if: you want to stretch out flat or seat six. Look at the Weston or a larger model instead.

2. Redwood Outdoors 6 Person Barrel: best value with heater included

Redwood Outdoors builds this barrel from Canadian heat-treated hemlock with 1 1/2 in (38 mm) walls. Heat treatment (often called thermowood) bakes the timber to make it more stable and rot-resistant without chemicals. The exterior is 6 ft 3/4 in wide by 5 ft 11 in long and 6 ft 4 1/2 in high, the interior volume is 140 cu ft (4 m³) and it weighs 900 lb (408 kg). The price includes a 6 kW Harvia KIP heater, stones, asphalt shingles and backrests, which saves you matching parts yourself. The maker lists a 30 amp breaker for the 6 kW heater and states that all heaters must be installed by a certified electrician.

Read the seating line closely: Redwood says "up to 6 people" but "spacious for 4". Headroom above the bench is 4 ft 1 1/8 in (1.25 m), so tall bathers should check that figure.

Verdict: strong value because the heater and roofing come in the box.
Best for: first-time buyers who want one order and one delivery.
Main drawback: six adults will feel cramped.
Skip it if: you want a wood stove. A 140 cu ft room is below the minimum volume of common wood stoves such as the Harvia M3, which starts at 212 cu ft.

If you want more headroom from the same maker, Redwood also sells an Extra-Wide Barrel that measures 7 ft (2.1 m) in diameter and swaps the facing benches for two-level seating.

3. SaunaLife Ergo Series E7: best for cold climates

SaunaLife's Ergo barrels use full-length thermo-spruce staves 1.65 in (42 mm) thick, which is thicker than most rivals on this list and helps hold heat when it is well below freezing outside. The E7 measures 81 in (2.06 m) across and 71 in (1.8 m) long, seats up to four, and ships at 1,213 lb (550 kg). Benches are knot-free thermo-aspen with an arched backrest, and the kit includes a heater guard, intake and exhaust vents, paraffin oil for the wood and two spare staves. Two floor drains, one under the heater and one by the door, help if the barrel shifts slightly out of level. SaunaLife covers the sauna with a limited lifetime warranty.

Verdict: the most cold-weather-ready shell here on paper.
Best for: northern US states, Canada and anyone who plans to use the sauna daily through winter.
Main drawback: you buy through a dealer and choose the heater separately, so the final price is harder to compare.
Skip it if: you want a single online checkout with the heater included.

4. Almost Heaven Weston 4-6 Person Flat Bottom: best for comfort

The Weston uses Western red cedar with an integral flat floor, which the maker says gives a wider, more spacious interior than a round-bottom barrel. It has an arched tempered glass door, a half-moon rear window and corrugated steel roofing. It measures 82.5 x 82 x 82 in (2.1 m each way) assembled. The standard heater is an 8 kW Harvia KIP with dial controls that the maker says reaches up to 190°F (88°C); it needs a 240V, 40 amp hardwired supply. You can also choose smart heaters or an M3 wood-burning kit. Almost Heaven lists a limited lifetime sauna room warranty and a 5-year heater warranty. When we checked on November 4, 2026, the Weston was listed as a new product marked "coming soon", so confirm the ship date before you order.

Verdict: the best answer to the classic "cold feet" complaint without leaving the barrel shape.
Best for: families and anyone who finds a curved floor awkward.
Main drawback: it sits a tier above the Pinnacle on price.
Skip it if: you only ever bathe alone or as a couple. The Salem or Pinnacle will heat faster and cost less.

5. Almost Heaven Kuuma Classic Barrel (Harvia Collection): best wood-fired barrel

Do not confuse this with Kuuma wood stoves from Lamppa Manufacturing; this is an Almost Heaven barrel in its Harvia Collection. It is built in Romania from thermally modified Nordic pine 1 9/16 in (40 mm) thick, with smooth linden benches and backrests and roofing shingles included. It measures 88 13/16 x 72 7/16 x 90 1/8 in (2.26 x 1.84 x 2.29 m) assembled, seats four to six on benches 23 5/8 in (60 cm) deep, and comes with an 8 or 9 kW Harvia electric heater (240V, 40 or 45 amps) or a wood-burning M3 kit. Almost Heaven quoted 6 to 8 weeks to ship.

Verdict: a well-specified large barrel when you want the option of a real fire.
Best for: off-grid plots or anyone set on wood heat.
Main drawback: premium price, and a wood stove adds a chimney, floor protection and clearances to plan.
Skip it if: you have easy 240V power and no interest in tending a fire.

Choosing the stove itself is a separate decision. Our guide to the best wood burning sauna stoves compares room volumes, stone capacity and chimney needs.

6. Dundalk LeisureCraft Canadian Timber Barrel: best for Canadian buyers

Dundalk LeisureCraft builds its Canadian Timber barrels from Eastern white cedar on solid cedar cradles. The range comes in three sizes: Harmony (4 person), Serenity (5 person) and Tranquility (6 person), with 20 in (51 cm) benches and optional half-moon windows. Pricing and heater choice go through local dealers.

Verdict: a long-established cedar option with a clear size ladder.
Best for: Canadian buyers who want a local dealer for delivery and support.
Main drawback: no public prices or heater specs online, so you need a quote to compare.
Skip it if: you want to configure and pay online tonight.

7. Almost Heaven Salem 2 Person: best for small yards

The Salem is Almost Heaven's two-seat barrel. It measures 78 x 47 x 75 3/8 in (198 x 119 x 191 cm) assembled, with 1 3/8 in (35 mm) ball-and-socket red cedar, stainless steel bands and a 6 kW Harvia KIP heater on a 240V, 30 amp hardwired supply. The benches are 39 1/4 in (1 m) long, and Almost Heaven quoted 6 to 8 weeks to ship. When we checked on November 4, 2026 it was not carrying a pre-sale markdown, so the price you see is its regular price. A smaller room heats faster and costs less to run per session.

Verdict: the sensible pick for couples and solo bathers.
Best for: narrow side yards and patios.
Main drawback: two people only, and the 39 in benches are too short to lie down on.
Skip it if: you entertain or have children who will want to join in.

How to choose a barrel sauna

Wood species: cedar, thermowood, hemlock or spruce

  • Red cedar (Almost Heaven Pinnacle, Salem, Weston) is the classic choice. It smells strongly of cedar and resists decay well.
  • Eastern white cedar (LeisureCraft) is lighter in color with a milder scent.
  • Thermally modified wood (SaunaLife thermo-spruce, Almost Heaven Kuuma pine, Redwood heat-treated hemlock) has been baked to improve stability and rot resistance. It is darker and has little resin.
  • Bench wood matters as much as the shell. Look for smooth, knot-free benches, such as SaunaLife's thermo-aspen or the linden on the Kuuma barrel.

Stave thickness and joints

Walls in this list run from 1 3/8 in to 1.65 in (35 to 42 mm). Thicker staves insulate better and resist warping. Look at how they join: tongue-and-groove or ball-and-socket profiles seal tighter than flat boards. The steel bands hold the barrel together, so check them after the first few weeks of use as the wood settles, and again each season.

Real seating versus brochure seating

Barrel capacity figures assume people sitting upright, shoulder to shoulder. Redwood is unusually honest here, saying its 6 person barrel is "spacious for 4". As a rule, take the advertised number, subtract one or two, and check the headroom figure above the bench if anyone is over 6 ft (1.83 m).

Electric heater or wood stove

Most barrels ship with an electric heater between 6 and 9 kW. They need a dedicated 240V circuit: Almost Heaven lists 30 amps for its 6 kW heater, and Redwood lists a 30 amp breaker for 6 kW and 40 amps for 8 kW. Amps (A) measure current, and a higher kW heater needs a heavier circuit. Smart heaters add Wi-Fi so you can start the heat from your phone.

Wood stoves need a minimum room volume and generous clearances. Almost Heaven offers wood heaters only on its cabins, cubes and large-diameter barrels. If you want a fire, start with a large barrel and read our wood stove comparison before you order.

Cold feet and how to avoid them

Hot air rises, so the floor of any sauna is cooler than the bench. A barrel puts your feet low. One published owner measurement from The Sauna Place, a retailer, logged about 180°F (82°C) at the bench and 160°F (71°C) at the floor in a flat-floor barrel with a 9 kW HUUM heater set to its top temperature. That is one installation, not a lab test, but it shows a flat floor and a heater with plenty of stones can keep the gap modest. Sitting higher, adding a foot rest and choosing a flat-floor model all help.

Heat-up time

Heat-up depends on size, heater and weather, and expect it to take longer on freezing nights. Almost Heaven says the dial version of the Harvia KIP heater has a delay timer you can set up to 8 hours ahead, and a smart controller lets you start the heat from your phone before you get home.

Porches, canopies and windows

A canopy or porch gives you a dry place to hang towels and cool off. A glass door and rear window make a barrel feel bigger but lose some heat. Weigh the view against your winter climate.

Base and assembly

Almost Heaven recommends a level, well-drained site. A concrete pad 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) thick suits permanent and larger installs. A compacted gravel base at least 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) deep drains well and is easier to lay. An existing deck can work if it carries the weight; the Redwood barrel weighs 900 lb (408 kg) and the SaunaLife E7 ships at 1,213 lb (550 kg) before stones and bathers. Almost Heaven says most of its saunas are designed for DIY assembly and recommends at least two people for the job.

Maintenance

Wipe the benches after use, stain or oil the exterior to keep water out, and check the stones once a year for cracks. If you add a fabric rain cover, note that Almost Heaven says its rain jackets do not fit wood-burning barrels with chimneys.

Barrel or cabin sauna?

A barrel is cheaper per seat, quicker to assemble and has less air volume to heat. A cabin or cube gives you flat walls, two bench levels, more headroom and room for a wood stove. If you are weighing both shapes, our guide to the best outdoor saunas covers cabin and cube models only, so you can compare like with like.

Safety rules before your first session

  • Electrics: use a licensed electrician for the 240V heater circuit and any cable run to the garden. Ask whether your area needs a permit and inspection.
  • Heater guard: fit the guard or railing supplied so no one falls against the stones.
  • Health: the National Capital Poison Center advises avoiding alcohol around sauna use, drinking plenty of fluids before and after, and leaving at once if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, nauseated or notice palpitations. It also says children and pregnant women are generally advised to avoid saunas. If you have a heart condition, low blood pressure or use medication patches, ask your doctor first.

Bottom line

Choose the Pinnacle if you want a clear, well-documented four-seater. Choose the Redwood 6 Person if you want the heater and roof in one box and will mostly use it as a four-seater. Choose the SaunaLife E7 if winter performance matters most. If you are buying this month, compare the real former prices before you commit. Our Black Friday sauna and hot tub deals guide explains how to tell a genuine discount from a reworded list price.

Frequently asked questions

Are barrel saunas any good in cold climates?

Yes, if the walls are thick and the heater is sized for the room. Look for staves of 1.5 in (38 mm) or more, a tight tongue-and-groove or ball-and-socket joint, and a heater the maker matches to that model. Expect longer heat-up times in deep winter and put the sauna on a level, well-drained base.

How much power does an electric barrel sauna need?

Most barrel heaters run on a dedicated 240V circuit. Almost Heaven lists a 30 amp requirement for its 6 kW heaters, and Redwood Outdoors lists a 30 amp breaker for 6 kW and 40 amp for 8 kW. A licensed electrician should size and install the circuit.

Can I put a wood-burning stove in any barrel sauna?

No. Small barrels are usually electric-only because wood stoves need a minimum room volume and safe clearances. Almost Heaven offers wood heaters only on its cabins, cubes and large-diameter barrels. Check the stove's minimum room volume against the barrel's interior volume before you buy.

Why do people say barrel saunas give you cold feet?

Hot air rises, so the floor of any sauna is cooler than the bench. In a round barrel your feet sit low and close to the floor. A flat floor, a heater with a large stone mass and sitting on the upper part of the bench all help.

How long does a barrel sauna take to arrive?

It depends on the maker. In November 2026 Almost Heaven listed 6 to 8 weeks for its Pinnacle barrel. Order early if you want to use it this winter, and prepare the base before the ground freezes.
